Alive Gann of Greenfield died Saturday at his home following heart failure. He was 77.

Mr. Gann was a native of Fort Smith, Ark. [sic; born in Webster Co., MO, grew up in Greenwood, AR], and lived in Greenfield for 60 years [sic; perhaps five years -- lived in Soledad from the early 1940's to the early 1990's]. He worked in road maintenance for Monterey County before his retirement. Mr. Gann was a member of the Moose Lodge, Soledad Lions, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He enjoyed bowling, playing horseshoes, telling jokes and collecting ball caps.

Mr. Gann is survived by his son, Edmond Gann of Salinas; his daughter, Charlotte Hatchell of Soledad; his brother, Ray Gann of Salinas; his sisters, Ruth Prince of Oregon and Mildred McGill [sic; Miguel] of Soledad; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Gann also leaves his companion and friend, Vivien Breiling.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Whitehurst Terry Funeral Chapel in Soledad. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the mortuary chapel. Burial will be at Soledad cemetery.
