1990, page B3 Five killed in head-on collisions FOREST GROVE - Four men were killed, including a father and his two sons, and six others were injured early Monday in a head-on collision a mile south of Forest Grove on Oregon 47. [Mention of other unrelated accident elided.] Dead at the scene of the Forest Grove crash were Donald H. Veach, 47, and his sons, Donald A. Veach, 24, and Darrin J. Veach, 21, all of Carlton, and Jose Antonio Lopez, 39, of Hillsboro. Darrin Veach and Lopez were the drivers. According to Sherre Calouri, spokeswoman for the Washington County sheriff's office, Veach's car was traveling north on the highway and crossed into the southbound lane, hitting the Lopez car about 5:55 a.m. The collision occurred at Anderson Road. Calouri said it was not known if anyone was wearing a seat belt. "It looked like they hit perfectly square head-on," said Forest Grove Fire Lt. Steve Vanderzanden. "Looking at it, I don't think the intersection had anything to do with it." The men in Lopez's car were going to jobs at Fisher Farms Nursery in Gaston. The Veaches were headed to work at Reimers Furniture Manufacturing in Hillsboro. The six injured passengers were taken to three Portland hospitals by two medical helicopters and an ambulance. At Emanuel Hospital & Health Center, Argimiro Lopez-Escutia, 26, of Cornelius was in critical condition. Ignacio Lopez-Andrade, 33, also of Cornelius, was in fair condition with head cuts and a broken wrist. Juan Leon-Ortiz, 30, of Forest Grove was in serious condition with a head injury at St. Vincent Hospital & Medical Center. Juan Sanchez, age and address unknown, was listed in serious but stable condition with head injuries late Monday. At University Hospital, Rafael Ruiz-Quintana, 28, and Ismael Ruiz-Aguilar, 19, both of Forest Grove, were in fair condition with bruises and facial cuts. Reimers plant manager Steven Ostlund said the Veaches were excellent employees who would be sorely missed. He said the elder Donald Veach had worked as an upholsterer with the company since 1981. Son Donald started in 1985 and worked in the office panel department, and Darrin had worked in upholstery since April 1988. [Other unrelated accidents elided.] |
